A depleted under 21 team fell to a defeat to Glenamaddy/Glinsk in the first round of the Championship in Glenamaddy on Saturday afternoon. Playing in dreadful conditions, it was always going to be a difficult task with no fewer than six key players missing through injury but they fought bravely to the end. Three first half points from Cathal Mulryan and another from Joseph Donnellan kept Cortoon in touch at the break after Glenamaddy had scored 1-5. However, from the restart, the hosts went straight up the pitch and found the back of the net to leave the Shamrocks with a mountain to climb. They rallied though, and points from Peter Higgins and two from Donnellan frees cut the deficit to five before Mulryan dropped a ball onto the edge of the small rectangle and Donnellan rose highest to punch it home and it looked like they might be back in it. It wasn’t to be, however, as Glenamaddy rattled off four unanswered points. It could have been worse when the Cortoon defence was breached in the dying seconds but goalkeeper, Darren Dempsey, spread himself well to block out the shot. The back door now beckons and hopefully we might have a few of our injured players back by then.

Hard luck to the four Cortoon lads, Donal O’Neill, Paul Varley, Cathal Mulryan, and Adrian Varley, who were involved with the Galway squad that came up just short in their National Football League encounter with Donegal on Sunday.

The Club held an Open Forum Meeting on Sunday with the objective of encouraging members of the community to participate and contribute in ensuring the future success of the club, both adult and juvenile. The gathering was very well attended and a number of ideas were put forward as regards how the Club should progress for the future, which the Executive Committee will now pursue. It was a very informative meeting, both for the members and the committee, and it was great to see so many willing to volunteer to help the Club improve both on and off the pitch. We would like to thank all those who attended and we look forward to working closely with you over the coming months.

Also on the day, we presented the Connolly Cup, for Club Person of the Year, to Shane Gilmore. Shane demonstrated his unquestionable love and dedication to the Club when he twice travelled from his new home in Canada to line out for the Senior team in Championship action, deferring his return and taking time off work to play a starring role in our epic journey.

With the start of the football season just a matter of weeks away, the Club Officers have been hard at work in the background ensuring everything is in place for what we hope will be another successful season. Following on from the AGM just before Christmas, a number of positions remained unfilled and we are delighted to announce that these have now been filled. Padraic McGagh has taken over as Underage Chairman with Enda Cannon coming in as Assistant Treasurer. The Senior management team has also been put in place with Mickey Costello being ratified at an Executive Committee meeting last week. Michael John Concannon is returning as a selector alongside Brian Walsh and Strength & Conditioning Coach, Cathal Furey who have both agreed to stay on for another year.

Midweek training will soon be able to re-commence when the floodlights, which were very generously donated to us by Dunmore McHales GAA Club, are installed on Friday evening to replace the lights that were stolen from Brownsgrove last year. We would like to take this opportunity to thank Dunmore McHales for their generosity.

On April 22nd 2014, Cortoon Shamrocks GAA club will celebrate 126 years of existence. This has been made possible because of the overwhelming backing we have always enjoyed from our loyal supporters, often in very difficult circumstances. Cortoon Shamrocks GAA club would like to take this opportunity to invite you and your family members to attend an Open Forum Meeting in the Cortoon Hall on Sunday January 19th 2014 at 3:00pm. The objective of this gathering is to encourage members of the community to participate and contribute in ensuring the future success of the club, both adult and juvenile. We value new ideas, fresh opinions and constructive feedback. Lifting a trophy in September is a culmination of hard work carried out both on and off the field. Everyone celebrates the team but success is only possible with the diligence of the unsung heroes standing in the shadows. The late Nelson Mandela once said: "It is the light that frightens us, not the dark." What we can accomplish if we pull together is infinite. Let us start that journey next Sunday.

With the start of the football season just a matter of weeks away, the Club Officers have been hard at work in the background ensuring everything is in place for what we hope will be another successful season. The under 21 team will kick off the football season withwith the first round of the Championship provisionally pencilled in for the 9th February with the draw taking place tonight (Wed). They will be guided on their journey by the new management team of Martin Maloney, Darragh Glynn and Norman Connolly.

Midweek training will soon be able to re-commence when the floodlights, which were very generously donated to us by Dunmore McHales GAA Club, are installed on Friday evening to replace the lights that were stolen from Brownsgrove last year. Message from the Chairman:

At the outset, can I, as Chairman of Cortoon Shamrocks, and on behalf of my fellow Officers, wish all our members and supporters at home or in other lands a very happy and healthy 2014. Being elected Chairman of the Shamrocks to me was a great honour, when I think of all the great people that held the position down through the years. I am also very conscious of the major task that the job entails, but having said that, I with the help of all the Officers will do my best to live up to the standards set by those that preceded me, they will be a hard act to follow. Most encouraging for me is the amount of people that have offered to help at some level for the coming year, but we need more, especially at under-age level, and be sure and attend the upcoming under-age AGM. For more information on this, and other events during the year, read the Club notes. If you haven’t been asked or offered already, don’t forget to give your name to any member of the Committee, as the saying goes, a job shared being shared is a job being halved, and going forward don’t ask what your Club can do for you, but say what can I do for my Club, and with that attitude being adopted by all, our Club can only be a much better place. Looking forward to working with, and for, you all for the coming twelve months.

Correction

In December, we reported that Kieran Kelly, Brian Walsh, and Leo Hynes were part of the Galway squad that won the All-Ireland Masters title. We neglected to mention that Paul Bradley, who also starred in the previous year’s All-Ireland success, was also a key member of the current title winning squad. Apologies for the omission.

The start of the football season is almost upon us with the U21 team due out in Championship action in the next few weeks. A meeting of the U21 management and squad will take place later in the week, date and time to be confirmed. Keep an eye on the Club’s Facebook page for details.
