The Senior team advanced to the third round of the John Dunne Cup on Sunday evening following a hard-fought victory away to Kilkerrin/Clonbern. Cortoon got off to the perfect start as Cathal Mulryan, fresh from his starring role in the All-Ireland u21 final, pointed in the very first attack. Clonbern had a goal chance a few minutes later but goalkeeper, Darragh Glynn, closed down the attacker but, in doing so, fell awkwardly on his shoulder. David Warde then added another point before Glynn couldn’t continue and had to be replaced by Adrian Ansbro. The home side pulled one back from a free but a point from full-forward, Adrian Varley, another All-Ireland hero, restored the advantage. Mickey Costello went close to finding the back of the net in the 12th minute but his effort was blocked. Clonbern reduced the deficit to one with a point before Costello again went close to raising a green flag, this time finding only the side netting. A quick ’45 from Mulryan found Adrian McDonnell in space and he slotted over to extend the lead to two. Clonbern then hit a purple patch as they scored 1-2 without reply but the Shamrocks dug in and two points from Warde closed out the half and the teams were separated by the smallest of margins as Clonbern led by 1-4 to 0-6.

Clonbern went on the attack straight from the restart and doubled their lead with a point. In the third minute of the half, a ball over the top of the Cortoon defence eluded full-back Enda Ansbro and, while trying to recover, only succeeded in bringing down his man. Referee, Gerry Daly, signalled a penalty and it looked like the game was about to get away from Cortoon. Adrian Ansbro, however, had other ideas and spared his brothers blushes as he dived low to his right to keep out the spot-kick. This spurred on the rest of the team as they blitzed Clonbern with five unanswered points from Adrian Varley, Warde (2), Alan Boyle, and Rory Maloney. Mulryan then had a chance at goal after he was found with a delightful ball from Adrian Varley but he drilled his shot just the wrong side of the upright and into the side netting. Clonbern reduced the gap to one with a pointed free and one from play and the two sides exchanged points as Warde got his sixth of the game following some neat play between Brian Roache and David Finnegan and Jim Gilmore slotted one over after a lung-busting run forward by our third u21 hero, Paul Varley, in which he exchanged passes with his brother, Adrian. Cortoon held on to win by a single point and can look forward now to the Championship which starts in a couple of weeks against Tuam Stars. Full-time score: Kilkerrin/Clonbern 1-9 Cortoon Shamrocks 0-13.
