Opening Day Heartache For Seniors

posted 9 Apr 2013, 16:32 by Unknown user
The Senior team suffered a devastating defeat and the hands of Annaghdown in Brownsgrove in the opening game of the League campaign. Leading by two points with just seconds remaining, Cortoon conceded a free, about 35 yards from goal. There didn’t seem to be too much danger as Cortoon had plenty of bodies back but the free was lofted into the area and an Annaghdown hand was first to meet it and it ended up in the back of the net. Cortoon had started the game slowly and looked to be heading in at the break trailing by 0-7 to 0-3, with the scores coming from Joseph Donnellan, David Warde, and a Derek Savage free, but in the 28th minute, Cortoon were awarded a free which was taken quickly to Donnellan, who shot, low and hard, across the keeper and into the corner of the net. The Shamrocks opened the second half more brightly and a delighful point from a tight angle by Damian Varley was followed by a  pointed free from Warde. Annaghdown levelled the score before Mickey Costello brushed aside a big hit before sending the ball over the bar. Annaghdown regained the lead with two points before Warde tied it up again. A short free was worked between Costello, Savage and substitute Brian Walsh with the latter firing over while a point from Savage three minutes from time looked to have done enough. It wasn't to be, however, as Annaghdown continued to battle and were rewarded for their efforts with a goal from the last kick of the game Team: Adrian Ansbro; Brian Roache, Brion Gilmore, Fergal Tierney; Damian  Varley (0-1), Norman Connolly, Paul Varley; David Finnegan, Cathal Mulryan; Mickey Costello (0-1), Derek Savage (0-2), Adrian McDonnell; David Warde (0-3), Alan Boyle, Joseph Donnellan (1-1). Subs used: Brian Walsh (0-1) for Alan Boyle.
