The u16 team were victorious in their League game against Killererin in Barnaderg on Tuesday evening. Killererin took the lead on five minutes but Cortoon soon took control of the game. A poor kick-out was cut out by Jordan Rooney who slotted over from 30 yards. Four minutes later, another kick-out was won as Liam Maloney seized possession and ran at the defense. He faked a pass and the defender bought it and he was through and found the back of the net from 20 yards. The home team managed to pull a couple of points back and looked to be getting back into the game, but the comeback was shortlived as a long ball out of defense from Padraic Neenan was flicked on by Ross Holian to Maloney, who drew the defender before passing inside to Dylan Lowry who made no mistake and found the net from 14 yards. Moments later, Martin Boyle took a quick '45 into his brother, Damian, who quickly turned and fired over from 30 yards. Martin Boyle quickly followed that up with a pointed free after Maloney was fouled. Killererin pulled a point back before Martin Boyle and Lowry exchanged passes with the former slotting over his second of the game. Killererin were then thrown a lifeline as an attempt at a point dipped just under the crossbar and out of the reach of goalkeeper, Eoghan Fahy, but, yet again, Cortoon extinguished any hope of a comeback as Lowry received the ball in the corner and laid it off to the on-running Holian who took a couple of solos before finishing to the net to send Cortoon in at the break, leading by 3-4 to 1-4.
Killererin came out fighting in the second half and a goal and a point had them back within two points after six minutes. Cortoon, however, quickly reasserted their dominance as Lowry found Holian in the centre who in turn found Rooney who slotted over from 30 yards. Martin Boyle then went close after a quick free from Rooney as his shot came back off the crossbar. Some quick, short passes between Martin Boyle, Ronan Finnegan and Peter Gormally sent the latter through on goal and his exquisite chip just clipped the top of the bar and went over. Holian played a free across to Damian Boyle who ran at the Killererin defense and shot over from 25 yards. The woodwork again denied Cortoon after a cross-field ball from Martin Boyle found Maloney and his shot rattled the crossbar. Killererin scored from a free before Martin Boyle made sure of the points when his effort dipped under the bar. Holian went close in stoppage time but his effort was well saved. Full-time score: Killererin 2-6 Cortoon Shamrocks 4-7.
